 లోహితాక్ష: - ఎఱ్ఱని నేత్రములు గలవాడు.

 ప్రతర్దన: - ప్రళయకాలమున సర్వమును నశింపచేయువాడు.

 ప్రభూత: - జ్ఞానైశ్వర్యాది గుణసంపన్నుడు.

 త్రికకుబ్ధామ - ముల్లోకములకు ఆధారభూతమైనవాడు.

 పవిత్రం - పరిశుద్ధుడైనవాడు.

 పరం మంగళం - స్మరణ మాత్రముచే అద్భుతముల నంతమొందించి శుభముల నందించువాడు.

 ఈశాన: - సర్వ భూతములను శాసించువాడు.

 ప్రాణద: - ప్రాణి కోటికి ప్రాణశక్తి నొసగువాడు.

 ప్రాణ: - ప్రాణశక్తి స్వరూపమైనవాడు.

 జ్యేష్ఠ: - వృద్ధతముడు. (సృష్టికి పూర్వమునుండే ఉన్నవాడు)

 శ్రేష్ఠ: - అత్యంత ప్రశంసాపాత్రుడు.

 ప్రజాపతి: - సమస్త ప్రజలకు పతి.

 హిరణ్యగర్భ: - విశ్వగర్భమున నుండువాడు.

 భూగర్భ: - భూమిని తన గర్భమునందు ఉంచుకొన్నవాడు.

 మాధవ: - శ్రీదేవికి భర్తయైనవాడు.

 మధుసూదన: - మధువను రాక్షసుని వధించినవాడు.

 ఈశ్వర: - సర్వశక్తి సంపన్నుడైనవాడు.

 విక్రమీ - శౌర్యము గలవాడు.

 ధన్వీ - ధనస్సును ధరించినవాడు.

 మేధావీ - ఏకకాలములో సర్వవిషయగ్రహణ సామర్ధ్యము కలిగినవాడు.

 విక్రమ: - గరుడుని వీపుపై ఎక్కి ఇచ్ఛామాత్రముచే ఎచ్చటైనను విహరించగలవాడు.

 క్రమ: - నియమానుసారము చరించువాడు.

 అనుత్తమ: - తనకంటె ఉత్తములు లేనివాడు. దురాధర్ష: - రాక్షసులు కూడా ఎదుర్కోను శక్యము గానివాడు.

 కృతజ్ఞ: - ప్రాణులు చేయు కర్మములను చేయువాడు.

 కృతి: - కర్మకు లేదా పురుష ప్రయత్నమునకు ఆధారభూతుడై యున్నవాడు.

 ఆత్మవాన్ - తన వైభవమునందే సర్వదా సుప్రతిష్ఠుడై యుండువాడు.

Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam

The "world is a family" verse of Maha Upanishad is engraved in the entrance hall of the Parliament of India.^[1]

Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam is a Sanskrit phrase found in Hindu texts such as the Maha Upanishad, which means The World is One Family.^[2]

Translation[edit]

The phrase Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (Sanskrit: वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्) consists of several words: "vasudhā", the earth;^[3] "ēva" = indeed; and "kutumbakam", family.

History[edit]

The original verse appears in Chapter 6 of Maha Upanishad VI.71-73.^[4][5][6]Also found in the Rig Veda , it is considered the most important moral value in the Indian society.^[7][8][1] This verse of Maha Upanishad is engraved in the entrance hall of the parliament of India.^[1]

The world is a family

One is a relative, the other stranger,
say the small minded.
The entire world is a family,
live the magnanimous.

Be detached,
be magnanimous,
lift up your mind, enjoy
the fruit of Brahmanic freedom.

—Maha Upanishad 6.71–75^[7][4]

Subsequent ślokas go on to say that those who have no attachments go on to find the Brahman (the one supreme, universal Spirit that is the origin and support of the phenomenal universe). The context of this verse is to describe as one of the attributes of an individual who has attained the highest level of spiritual progress, and one who is capable of performing his worldly duties without attachment to material possessions.^[9]

Influences[edit]

The text has been influential in the major Hindu literature that followed it. The popular Bhagavata Purana, composed sometime between 500 CE and 1000 CE, the most translated of the Purana genre of literature in Hinduism,^[10] for example, calls the Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam adage of the Maha Upanishad, as the "loftiest Vedantic thought".^[11]

Dr N Radhakrishnan, former director of the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, believes that the Gandhian vision of holistic development and respect for all forms of life; nonviolent conflict resolution embedded in the acceptance of nonviolence both as a creed and strategy; were an extension of the ancient Indian concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.^[12]

References in the modern world[edit]

Narendra Modi, India's Prime Minister used this phrase in a speech at World Culture Festival, organized by Art of Living, adding that "Indian culture is very rich and has inculcated in each one of us with great values, we are the people who have come from Aham Brahmasmi to Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, we are the people who have come from Upanishads to Upgrah (Satellite)."^[13]
